67.4cm nagasa of classic shinogi zukuri form. Out of polish with features obscured, including what appear to be areas of mokume and masame. Visible chikei and other activities amongst mossing and patination. Nakago with sujikai yasurime and signed "Minamoto Kiyomaro", reverse dated a day in the second month of Ka-ei, which would be February of 1849. Kiyomaro is considered the greatest of the Shinshinto smiths, and was called the Masamune of Yotsuya. Immensely talented, Fujishiro rates him as Saijosaku, standing alongside Suishinshi Masahide and Naotane in the Shinshinto period. He died November 14th, 1854, as a result of suicide. Copper habaki and Type 98 mounts with single hanger. CONDITION: Out of polish, with areas of patination and surface scratching throughout. Mounts are good with some handling marks and scrapes to bare wood. There are no papers with this sword.
