66.7cm (approximately 26 - 1/4") nagasa of classic shinogi zukuri form with a tight gunome midare hamon and what looks like sunagashi and other hataraki. Nakago with kuri jiri, single mekugi-ana, kesho yasurime, and signed "Noshu Seki Ju Sukemitsu Nobumitsu tamahagane kore kitau". Sukemitsu Nobumitsu is recorded as a Showa smith working out of Gifu: see pg. 135 in Slough. Tsuba of ovoid form with carving of a mountain scene on one side, reverse overlooking a village with a fisherman in a boat, a man on the beach, and various trees, highlighted in gold. Fuchi, kabuto gane, and menuki of classic wartime form, with gilding on menuki still present. Blue-and-brown sword tassel. Wooden saya with a single hanger, and a partial leather covering. CONDITION: Blade with a well defined temper line with some surface scratches and some oil staining near tip. Some kizu on right side of mono uchi, just under yokote. Mounts with rubs and age related darkening commensurate with age, heavier around the menuki. Saya with some handling marks, chips, and scrapes to bare wood, the leather cover with evidence of fire damage at bottom, with typical alligatoring and heavy marks.
