Signed "Awataguchi Omi no Kami Tadatsuna", ura with "Asai Uji". Iriyamagata nakagojiri with finely executed katte sagari yasurime. Grain is not visible due to state of polish, but hamon is an active choji with Osaka-style yakidashi. Ko-maru boshi. Two piece habaki with gold foil of a textured ground with carved falling rain; bottom half has lost foil, one piece retained and included. Fuchi depicts a priest or a scholar with what appears to be a calligraphy brush, executed in shakudo; kashira with another relief scholar, this time with a fan. Tsuba pierced with a paulownia crest design, golden colored hitsu-ana plugs. Roiro saya with only 1 shitadome, one missing. There are two generations that signed this way, with the shodai Tadatsuna claiming to be descended from Awataguchi Kunitsuna. He worked in Settsu, and Fujishiro rates him as Josaku, and Wazamono; his son was the nidai Tadatsuna and is rated Jojosaku, and Ryowazamono. cf. Fujishiro, Shinto Hen, pgs. 127-131. 69.9cm nagasa, just a hair shy of 70cm. CONDITION: Blade is out of polish with some superficial scratches throughout. No fukure, and there is a micro-chip at boshi. Mounts with handling marks, sa-me (rayskin) is retained by a rubber band, and kashira but loose. This sword came from a World War II veteran's estate, and it is our understanding that this sword has not been submitted to shinsa.
