This is a very important Hubley piece, catalog # 385. As described in catalog -- A life-size model of this fierce-looking fellow, that makes a striking and unusual decoration for lawn or garden. Painted in natural colors. Provenance: "Written down by E.E. Frey as it was told to me by Mr. Koser. While Joseph L. Brenneman, Sr. was in California, he owned a live bull dog the size of this one. A certain artist in California saw Mr. Brenneman with the bull dog, persuaded him to set the bull dog on a table and hold in a certain position. The artist sculpted the dog, and when it was dry sent it to the Hubley Mfg. Co. Alive E. Koser was employed at that time by Hubley. The cut the plaster of Paris dog in size to lighten the weight. then the pattern and core boxes were made. They made two dogs to sell to the rich for decoration, but in 1929, the depression came and at that time, people couldn't afford them. They sent the two dogs to the New York office. One was brought back to Hubley for touchup to paint. Mr. Hartman was President, and Brenneman was treasurer at the time. Mr Koser bought one from Mr. Hartman. The other dog that was made was brought back from New York, broken down and melted. The plaster of Paris and pattern were destroyed in the cubicle. This is the only English Bull Dog of this size in existence, to my knowledge. Alive Eitnier Koser".
