Circa 1892-1893 per "Holland & Holland: 'The Royal' Gunmaker" by Dallas. 28" dovetail lump barrels with bead from sight on a narrow, sunken, slightly swamped smooth rib, with a gold inlaid "2" at rear, indicating that it was originally one of a pair. Barrels are engraved "Holland & Holland" and "13. Bruton Street. London", with stiff leaf engraving at the breeches. Underside of barrels with matching serial number and British nitro proofs, including 2010 proofs for 2 - 3/4" 12 gauge at 850 BAR with a nominal 16.6 IBD. Original proofs indicate 2 - 1/2" chambering, nominal .729 IBD, and 3 ton proof. Splinter forearm with Anson plunger release, point pattern checkering and large format scroll on exterior iron. Interior with matching serial number and "2". Action flats with serial number, view and proof marks, and "2". Sidelocks with large format scroll en suite with exterior iron, with shell and floral motifs on recoil shields, "Holland & Holland" engraved in their own vignette at bars, and "Royal Hammerless Ejector" on bottom. Double triggers protected by a blued trigger guard with serial number engraved. Automatic safety with "SAFE" inlaid in gold ahead of slide. Darkly grained walnut stock with teardrops, point pattern checkering about the diamond wrist, and a brass plaque on toeline, terminating in a Kick-Eez rubber recoil pad; slightly cast off for a right handed shooter. In a leather wrapped case with brass hardware, interior lined in forest green, with H&H trade label in lid and compartmentalized to hold gun when broken down, with accessories comprising brush, Beretta branded cloth, bottle of Hoppe's No. 9, H&H branded cleaning patces, and brush and jag heads. With a Holland & Holland advertising pamphlet and April 2001 dated price list. CONDITION: Very good as conserved. Barrels with most of their newer bluing, with some thinning to sharp edges and handling marks, most notable around the forearm contact point and a small spot of mossing on left barrel, approximately 3 - 1/2" behind muzzle. Forearm with escutcheon and reinforcement refitted, and newer wood with some handling marks, with a small indentation out at "fangs". Action with traces of case color, approximately 5%, with better retention in recessed areas, balance a smooth dove grey. Trigger guard, opening lever, and triggers reblued. Stock with minor handling marks and impressions, pad compressed somewhat. Mechanically fine, bores are very good with some frosting ahead of chambers. Ejectors are soft but in time. A British classic.
