Manufactured in 1863 at the height of the Civil War. Standard blued 24" barrel stamped on the top flat with the larger style 2-line address as was applied beginning around serial number 3000. Tapered German silver front sight blade and 900-yard graduated rear ladder sight set in the receiver dovetail. Full length magazine tube with large brass follower and forward sling bar. The iconic brass frame is silver plated and features beautiful Hoggson style factory engraving. The forward section on each side of the receiver is embellished with the usual spray of grape leaves with a central bunch of grapes and tendrils with a rope border. The left side of the receiver features a running buck and hound flanked by open foliate scroll over punch dot backgrounds and rope borders. The right side also has further foliate scrolls and rope borders, as well as the inscription "J.T.H. / to T.T.", which R.L. Wilson believed to be factory. It is likely this is a Civil War presentation, although neither individual is known. Gloss finished select grade figured walnut perch belly stock with obtuse comb angle. Stock is mounted with a rear sling swivel and rounded heel silver plated brass buttplate with a flourish of foliate scroll over punch dot engraving. Matching numbers observed on the barrel breech, inside of lower tang, stock channel, underside of the butt plate, and on both buttplate screws. The numbers on the tang and stock appear to have been initially stamped in error at the factory and corrected, silver plating present in the tang number stamps. This wonderful rifle is pictured on page 27 of R.L. Wilson's "Winchester Engraving", then part of the Col. T. Daghistani Collection. Born in 1949, Timoor Daghistani served as Jordanian ambassador to Spain from 1994 to 1999, becoming ambassador to the United Kingdom the same year, and at one point was married to Princess Basma bint Talal, daughter of King Talal of Jordan. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel finish has faded to a very attractive honest plum brown patina. Receiver retains approximately 40% or greater rich, toned silver plating, especially in the protected areas, the balance exhibiting a very attractive golden mellow mustard patina. Butt plate likewise displays a mellow patina with traces of original silver plating along the edges. Stock fits very well and rates very good with some scattered dings and abrasions as well as a split on the left side running from the butt plate. Very good, strong and bright bore with some mild black powder abrasion. Fine mechanics. An outstanding, highly attractive published factory engraved Henry for the discerning collector.
