George A. Shuman was born in 1827 and enlisted in the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry in September of 1861, and served there until his discharge in July of 1865. Over the course of his term as a volunteer in Companies C and H of that regiment, he saw action at engagements such as Thompson's Station, Chickamagua, Lookout Mountain, and the March to the Sea campaign under General Sherman. This Confederate Spiller and Burr revolver was passed down through the consignor's family, captured by Shuman during his service with the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil War. Revolver is in classic configuration with brass frame, 7" octagon barrel with screw in cone front sight, hammer notch rear sight, and 2 piece wood grips. Matching serial numbers observed on rammer, barrel toward the rear, cylinder, frame underneath trigger guard, underside of trigger guard, and twice on the butt. Center pin/rammer link is a replacement. Accompanying provenance and accessories include a notarized letter dated July 17, 2024 stating that this revolver descended through the family, CDV of George Shuman after the war, "Yankee Cavalrymen" by John W. Rowell which tells the story of the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil War, copies of period photographs of Shuman, copies of a letter from Shuman to his wife Fannie in November of 1864 catching her up on events corroborated by pages 196-200 of the previously mentioned book, copies of Muster Rolls, framed original commissions to 2nd Lieutenant and First Sergeant, a high condition pair of binoculars from the period in a case with handwritten note "G. Shuman" on a piece of paper on the inside of the lid, powder horn, and hunting bag. CONDITION: Very good, with iron assemblies turned a freckled gray patina with areas of water related abrasion and delamination throughout. Brass frame is a pleasant mellow patina. Grips show no major signs of distress. Mechanically fine. Bore is frosted with abrasion throughout and well-defined 7 groove gain twist rifling.
