Produced in the second quarter of 1874, this trapdoor carbine falls within the accepted range of carbines that could have been issued to Custer's 7th Cavalry prior to the infamous 1876 Battle of Little Big Horn. It is fitted with a blued barrel measuring 21 - 3/4" with some marring at the muzzle. Breech is marked with a condemned "C" and "V / P / (eagle head)" proofs, an indication the barrel is likely a replacement. Pinned blade front sight and carbine rear graduated on the base to 500 yards. Standard high arch breech block marked "MODEL / 1873" over crossed arrows, an eagle head, and "US" markings. The lock is marked with federal eagle, "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873" stampings, and 2-click tumbler. Walnut carbine stock correctly without tool trap, marked with an encircled script "P" firing proof and faint oval inspector cartouche. Standard iron mounts including barrel band with stacking swivel, 2-piece trigger guard, saddle ring and bar, and "US" marked carbine butt plate. CONDITION: Very fine overall.
