A U.S. Model 1864 enlistedman's light artillery shako by government contractor Horstmann Brothers & Co. Dark blue pressed wool body with tarred leather crown and bill. Shako has all original hardware, including brass ordnance bursting bomb plume socket with red horsehair plume and eagle die struck brass front plate above crossed cannons. Interior of crown with maker's label: "3 / Horstmann Bros. & Co./ Manufacturers of/Military Goods, Fifth and Cherry Sts./Philadelphia." CONDITION: Very good. Leather top is very nice with none of the typical cracking you normally see. No fading or bug damage to wool. Original leather sweatband present with typical age cracking and age commensurate wear with scuffing to underside in some places. No restoration observed.
