Solid example of a Civil War era Pattern 1858 officer's chapeau. Dropped as a regulation item in 1851, the officers’ chapeau prescribed in the 1847 regulations was reinstated for dress in 1858 “for all general and field officers at their option.” This example is consistent with the 1858 pattern. Chapeau is constructed of faux beaver fur on a pressed form and lined with maroon silk. A gold embroidered riband with staff officer’s button and eagle cockade pin secure a black grosgrain cockade in place. Heavy gold bullion tassels adorn each end of the hat. A black ostrich plume runs the length of the crown. Makers stamp inside of silk crown identifies the maker as WARNOCK & CO. / ST. NICHOLAS HOTEL. CONDITION: Excellent with no fading or bug damage.
