Lot consists of: (A) Regulation M1872 staff officer's kepi. Beautiful gold bullion thread "U.S" to front. Proper tarred bill and staff buttons. Inside has red polished cotton lining, original sweatband, and maker stamp to crown "THE M.C. LILLEY & CO / COLUMBUS OHIO." Lining has separated at rear and brass ring was reattached. (B) Enlisted M1872 cavalry kepi. Period correct 2nd US Cavalry crossed saber insignia with desirable hinged "B" company designator to front. Inside retains original lining with sweatband maker marked, "HORSTMANN BROS. & CO. / PHILADELPHIA / ARMY FURNISHERS / CONTRACT MAY 5, 1881." Tarred bill shows past evidence of stitching stabilization to keep it attached. CONDITION: Very good overall. Enlisted example shows moth damage to outside wool body while officer example is near perfect. Both are from a smoke free home.
