An entire article was written on this short barreled 3rd model 1866 Winchester SRC in the Spring 2017 edition of the "WINCHESTER COLLECTOR" by Clark Linss, pages 26-28. He goes into detail on the nuances of this carbine. First, the barrel measures 18". The front sight barrel band sets back 1/4". The gun has been converted to 44 CF. A military type sling swivel has been added to rear base of stock. A U stamped barrel band with swivel replaced the original front band. There is a washer that has replaced the lever screw on right side of frame. The serial number inside the stock channel is matching but the rifle butt plate is number 8720. The barrel retains a light but legible Winchester barrel address. Gun has the correct two leaf folding rear barrel sight. Original brass frame gun with brass rifle plate. The barrel shows no crown. The writer suggests that there were some short carbines offered and that crowning did not begin until after serial number 17000. Stocks are walnut. CONDITION: Brass has been cleaned at one time. The cleaning rod measures 20 3/4" The barrel and tube are brown patina. The loading gate is a blue brown mix. Rear stock is shy to metal with a repaired crack on left side. The lever has been polished near bend. The action works fine and the rifling is pronounced with minor abrasions. No letter is available on this serial number. Forearm matches stock tone with scattered dents and impressions. Without a letter, there is no real way to be sure as to whether this is a very rare short carbine or one that has been altered
