According to the Colt factory archive letter, this gun left the factory as a .44/40 with a 4 - 3/4" barrel. Shipped soft with rubber grips. It was shipped to Hartley & Graham, New York, New York on April 12, 1884 in a shipment of 20 guns. It was then New York engraved with a scroll and foliate pattern with a punch dot background. There are borders and other geometric designs incorporated into the engraving. Two line barrel address on top of the barrel, "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. CO. / HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.". 44 CF caliber designation on the front left trigger bow. Three line patent dates on the left side of the receiver. Matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. It sports a set of carved bulls head mother of pearl grips. It has been copper plated so the silver-plating will stick to the copper. The cylinder and ejector housing show remnants of gold wash. Hartley & Graham did a lot of extra work on this gun. The action locks up tight and indexes fine. It has all four clicks. CONDITION: This gun retains most of the retailer applied silver finish. There are a few spots that are thinning and you can see the copper plating showing through. The engraving was performed by a master engraver. The mother of pearl grips have a few chips but they fit the gun very well. Good strong bore with well defined lands and grooves. A very desirable and attractive old west gun.
