Circa 1877. A London best antique combination safari rifle and game shotgun with 2 sets of dovetail Damascus barrels and rebounding hammers. Both sets of barrels are built for black powder and with extractors. 577-500 barrels read “CONSTRUCTED BY MESSRS GYE & MONCRIEFF ST JAMES’S ST, LONDON” and are built with a finely filed flat top rib with standing fixed rear sight with platinum triangle marker and fire blued silver tipped front blade sight. Bottoms of 577-500 barrels read “HENRY’S PATENT”, “A&T”, “3847” &”3848”, “1250” (serial number). Barrel flats stamped with proofs and “39”. The 12 bore barrels with smooth rib. Rib with round front bead sight and reads “CONSTRUCTED BY MESSRS GYE & MONCRIEFF ST JAMES’S ST, LONDON”. Top of rib has been tapped plugged. Bottom of barrels with guns serial number “1250”. Barrel flats stamped “12” and with proofs. Round action frame vertical third fastener, scroll engraved top lever and double triggers. Top lever engraved “SOLID SELF LOCKING VERTICAL GRIP”. Action metal engraved with fine scroll throughout. Top of locks engraved “CONSTRUCTED BY MESSRS GYE & MONCRIEFF ST JAMES’S ST, LONDON”. Double triggers protected by full coverage scroll engraved trigger guard that extends to a scroll engraved bottom strap. Bottom strap also engraved with guns serial number. Action flats have 2 “G&M” marks (Gye & Moncrieff), 2 crown over “V” (London view mark), and “PATENT NO 524 1870" with "550” (patent use number) inside an oval. Brownish-red straight grain stock with traditional straight hand grip with English flat checkered grip has a vacant gold oval and eye for sling. Left side of buttstock has an inlaid brass oval engraved “DR. SHORB.” Stock is finished to a checkered hard rubber plate. Matching splinter forends with scroll engraved Deeley lever releases and horn insets at the tips. Exterior iron metal is scroll engraved. Interior metal is color case hardened with “G&M” and interior wood are stamped “1250” (serial number). This rifle/shotgun combination fits in a two-tiered oak and leather case with a complete set of cleaning and reloading implements for both rifle and shotgun barrels. Included are a paper patch 300-grain bullet mold and the hollow point pin, adjustable powder and shot measures (3 drams of powder for the shotgun and 5 drams for the rifle and one ounce of shot), and a trim tool for paper shotshells. Also included are a striker key, chamber brush, turn screws, reloading dies for the rifle cartridges and two cleaning rods, tips, jags, brushes and oil. Chambers are 2 - 1/2", BWT are .033 in left barrel and .035 in right, choke is .008 in left, .010 in right, weight is 10 lbs 14 oz with rifle barrels, and 7 lbs 12 oz with shotgun barrels. Accompanied by copies of "The British Bore Rifle" and "The Double Rifle Primer". CONDITION: Very Good. 577-500 Barrels are very good inside and out. 12 bore barrels are very good with fading Damascus. Action is sound. Stock is very good with some handling marks and long pad. 577-500 and 12 bore forends very good with light handling marks. Case good with age and storage wear. PROVENANCE: Cal Pappas Collection
CORRECTION: Barrel sling eye has been spliced into the rib, and the barrels have an old rebrown.
