Circa 1891. An exquisite early double rifle with 28” blacked dovetail steel barrels. Barrels are fit with extractors, and a filed flat top rib with dolls head extension, one standing rear sight regulated for 100 yards and two folding sights regulated for 150 and 200 yards. Front blade sight with round white tip, and all leaves are fit with platinum sight markers. Bottom rib fit with loop for sling. Rifle is proofed in London, which is stamped on bottom of barrels. Barrels also stamped “39”. Top of left barrel engraved “MORTIMER & SON” while right reads “EDINBURGH”. Jones underlever rebounding hammered action is built with third fastener and with faint case colors. Action is fit with double triggers and long top and bottom straps and independent block safes. Handsome reddish brown stock with a slender, sharply checkered, pistol grip with horn grip cap. Stock belly behind grip cap reads “7280” for serial number. Stock belly fit with loop for sling and vacant golden oval. Butt with 1” orange rubber pad. Slender splinter forend with lever release. Rifle lives in a vintage leather case with “MORTIMER & SON” paper trade label. Case furnished with cleaning tools and reloading accessories. Case outer lid reads “A.J. KING”, “KING’S OWN”. Accompanied by a set of RCBS dies, approximately 13 boxes of Woodleigh bullets, and letter from John Dickson & Son with a copy of the record book for this gun, letter from the National Museums of Scotland regarding some research regarding previous owners, and a copy of the 1905 Army List which lists Alexaner James King, one of the owners, as a Major and later an Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry. CONDITION: Excellent, as refurbished. Barrels are excellent (inside and out). Action is clean and appears to be mechanically sound. Stock is excellent with very light handling marks. Forend is very good. Case is very good. Weight is 9 lbs 1 oz PROVENANCE: Cal Pappas Collection

CORRECTION: The barrels are reblued, the stocks revarnished, the pad is newer, and the front sight affixed by MarineTex or equivalent.
