Numerous Richards are recorded in London in Stockel, with a broad range of dates. Turned cannon barrel with three wedding rings at the girdles, with a protrusion for assistance when removing barrel. Underside of chamber with view and proof marks, boxlock action with floral engraving and "RICHARDS" in a ribbon, with wrigglework borders. Reinforced cock of more recent manufacture. Trigger guard with bouquet of roses. Stock with profusely inlaid silver wire with floral scroll designs. Silver grotesque buttcap hallmarked, maker indistinguishable, but for a Birmingham maker circa 1777. CONDITION: Cleaned in the European fashion over some scattered darkness and handling marks, a heavier strike at rear girdle. Engraving legible but somewhat softened. Replaced cock as aforementioned. Silver wire is good, missing a few strands and relaid in a few spots. Stock with some handling marks and chips at fangs, with a heavier strike at butt. Mechanically fine, bore with a few area of oxidation ahead of chamber but largely clean. A nice small sized pistol.
