Signed in gold on the backstrap "M.J. CHAUMONT FABRICANT A LIEGE", Chaumont was active in Liege circa 1836 to 1850. This pepperbox features a 4 barrel cluster, each barrel of fine twist pattern with gold flourishes at the breeches. The barrels are also numbered, corresponding to their breeches. The case hardened frame is attractively scroll engraved with geometric borders and graceful gold inlaid scrolls. The brilliantly blued ring trigger is likewise finely engraved with gold scroll. The scalloped ivory grips are also tastefully carved with foliate scroll and line work, the screw and escutcheon embellished with gold. The pistol is housed in a French fit crushed velvet lined leatherette case, which also includes a bullet mold combination tool and Dixon combination flask. CONDITION: Near excellent for its age. Barrels retains strong and attractive twist patterning with some discoloration from age. Case colors have largely dulled, although a few bright flashes are retained in the protected areas. Trigger retains the vast majority of its original blue. Grips are likewise fine with a pleasant mellow cream patina. The case exterior has started to flake with some discoloration on the liner, but still display well.
