According to the Colt Factory archive letter, this gun left the factory as a .38 Colt with the barrel not listed. It was blue, and the stocks were not listed. It was shipped to J.P. Moores Sons, New York, New York, on April 2, 1877, in a shipment of 8 guns. It has all the very early features. It has a 1/4" half moon front sight with a V notch rear sight. Six shot fluted cylinder and A one piece coarse checkered rosewood grip. It does not have a mainspring tension screw in the front grip strap. Two line barrel address on top of the barrel. "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. CO. / HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." etched panel on the left side of the barrel. "COLT D.A. 38." Three line patent dates on the left of the frame. Matching serial numbers observed on the frame, trigger guard, backstrap back of the cylinder, and on the grip in the chanel. CONDITION: This gun retains virtually all of the retailer applied nickel finish. Nitre blue small parts show some wear. The checkering on the grips is sharp and crisp. Bore is good with well defined lands and grooves. A very early Colt 1877DA. Please note that the following lot was part of the same shipment.
