Manufactured 1942. Issued during the first full year of the War. This gun has the G.H.D. cartouche on left side with ordnance bomb. Dewey started inspecting these guns after serial number 927000 in June of 1942. The left side of the frame is stamped U.S. with the ordnance bomb. The unmarked six row handguard is correct for this period. The top of the barrel has the Ordnance bomb with "PW" proof, with off set PW on forward section of frame. It is a takedown model, correct for this era, as is the factory blue finish. The left side of barrel is stamped "CYL. / 2 3/4 CHAM" with Winchester Model 97 legend and the Winchester factory legend on the right. The bar is correctly not stamped Model 1897. The barrel protrudes from the shield exactly 1". Sling swivels are proper for this era. The plain pistol grip stock with comb flutes is also correct. About the only unusual aspect of this gun is the fitted widow peak smooth steel buttplate, probably replaced due to damage to Winchester plastic plate. Otherwise, every aspect of this gun is correct per two reference guides. Gun is also accompanied by a very nice "1917" dated and flaming bomb marked Winchester bayonet with leather scabbard. CONDITION: Excellent. Receiver retains about 95% of it's commercial blue finish with some scattered handling marks. The back section of the tube is patina, while front exposed section retains most of the matte blue. The butt stock is excellent with usual light impressions, but there is an expertly repaired chip at toe probably the cause for the replaced butt plate. Forearm is excellent. Bore is excellent with light abrasion. Fine working order. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection.
