Originally manufactured in 1907, this highly attractive carbine has been wonderfully upgraded with no expenses spared as a tribute to John Wayne with engraving by former Colt factory master engraver Robert Burt, as signed "Engraved by Robert B. Burt - 1990" on the top of the receiver. Shortened to the highly desirable 16" trapper carbine configuration, the lustrous polished blue finished barrel features gold inlaid bands at muzzle and breech, the scroll flourish surrounded .44-40 caliber designation also done in gold inlay. Well executed areas of open floral scroll engraving with punchdot backgrounds added to the barrel between the bands and between the rear sight and band, an additional area in the underside of the magazine tube. Barrel bands are graced with tasteful gold scroll inlay. Gold washed blade front sight and ladder rear. Left side of the saddle ring receiver features cowboy rider and Winchester carbine vignettes done in relief gold surrounded by foliate scroll. Right side showcases a portrait of John Wayne and a Colt single action revolver with rig, wreathed with further scrollwork. Underside has John Wayne's "JW" initials done in gold inlay. Attractively case hardened large loop lever. Figured walnut carbine forend and butt stock. Case hardened carbine butt plate with near full coverage foliate scroll engraving. CONDITION: Excellent, near new as restored and upgraded. Virtually all of the rich and attractive expertly reapplied finishes are retained throughout. Stocks are fine with only light impressions from handling. Very fine bright bore with well defined rifling. Crisp mechanics. An outstanding, extremely attractive master engraved Winchester.
