This powder horn measures about 12" overall across the bow. The horn was attributed by William H. Guthman to the desirable Ticonderoga "Memento Mori" carver. The front of the horn is inscribed "George WooLcott : his horn / Made at Ticonderoga : November 9 : 1759". George Woolcott lived from 1747 until 1809 and was from Newington, Connecticut. George would have been only 12 at the date on the horn, however, his two older brothers, Caleb and Justus, were both privates in the 5th Company of Gen. Lyman's Connecticut Regiment, and they may have commissioned it for their younger brother. George later served in 1775 as an Ensign in the 2nd Connecticut Regiment. The inscription is engraved within the distinct elaborate "Memento Mori" carver's cartouche surrounded by ornate professionally engraved floral and foliate scrolls. The three stage horn has two scalloped rings below the spout followed by a faceted section. The main body begins at the top with a scalloped edge. The convex wood plug is retained by wood pins. CONDITION: Retains a pleasing honey patina. There is some deterioration due to water on back side of horn. PROVENANCE: Purchased from William Guthman, August, 2002, for $11,000. Accompanied by copy of Guthman's receipt and extensive records on George Woolcott and his brothers. An exceptional horn.
