Manufactured as part of the first US Navy contract in 1898 for 10,000 guns. 1,800 of these first contract rifles were issued to the USMC, many seeing service in Cuba and the Philippines during the Spanish American War and also in the Boxer Rebellion. Finished in polished blue. Hooded blade front sight and ladder rear. Receiver ring stamped "U.S.N. / (anchor) / No 8617 / N.C.T.". Correct 2-piece walnut stock mounted with a pair of barrel bands, sling swivels, and trap butt plate. 3 distinct kill notches present on the wrist. Left side of the magazine body is marked in electro pencil "Y1065266". CONDITION: Fine. Rifle retains significant portions of original blue turning to a plum patina with oxidation spotting. Wood rates very good with a rich age darkened appearance and scattered light impressions. Good strong bore with light frosting. Fine mechanics. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection
