Manufactured in 1894, FIRST YEAR. It seems as if every early 10 O'clock screw Model 1894 is found with a 26" octagon barrel in caliber 38-55. You never see carbines, round barrels or 32-40's and not all first year shipped guns have this type 1 receiver either. Regardless, these 1st type frame guns are highly prized and any 1st type in anything but an octagon 38-55 would be a grand prize. Again, this is a standard rifle with note to the extra screw featuring a full octagon barrel, full tube magazine, solid frame, blue finish, walnut stock with rifle butt plate and matching forearm. The barrel on this example bears the post 1901 PW proof while the frame does not indicating it probably went back to the factory for repair. The tang is a type one with August 21, 1894 patent date. The barrel has the type one earliest legend so it was not replaced when it was sent back. The rear sight is a scarce full buckhorn with typical German silver tip front. CONDITION: Fine. The frame retains about 60% blue with balance a gun metal grey but there are numerous dents on forward section of frame. The barrel is a smooth blue brown even patina with sharp legends. The tube retains at least 60% blue blending plum which may have been part of the repair. The stock is proud to metal with usual scattered dings with matching wear on forearm. The action is fine. The bore is well defined but frosted. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection.
