One of just 1474 1st model 1879 Hotchkiss rifles built at Springfield from Winchester made parts for the US Navy and subsequently modified into a carbine. Rifle features a shortened carbine length barrel marked at the breech with the "V / P" over eagle head and "US" over anchor Navy inspection markings. Blade front sight and "C" marked trapdoor carbine rear sight. Turned down bolt handle. Shortened carbine style 1-piece walnut stock with faint cartouche, a single barrel band, saddle ring, magazine cut off, and steel butt plate. CONDITION: Good. Barrel and receiver retrain traces of original blue with an overall cleaned light gray patina. Stock was sanded long ago and has since developed a nice, dark patina, some scattered dings and nicks present roughout, along with a split at the wrist. Strong, bright bore with some mild abrasion.
