This solid 18K gold folder was made by late great knife maker Jim Martin for Barret Smythe. Jim Martin custom 18K gold and black lip Tahitian pearl shell interframe front lock folder engraved by master engraver Tim George. Blade measures 2" and crafted from hand rubbed satin finished ATS-34. Marked "JIM MARTIN" on ricasso with Barret Smythe monogram. Frame is crafted from 18K gold with beautifully engraved foliate scrollwork. Scales are black lip Tahitian Pearl shell. The black lip pearl inlays are extremely dark, deep, and full of color. Even though this is a gent's folder it has an extremely heavy feel to it due to the sheer amount of 18K gold. It weighs 3.1 ounces. Jim Martin was one of the top knife makers of his day and he and other fine makers were commissioned by Barret Smythe to make knives for the New York City gallery. Most of Barret Smythe's knives were engraved by the top engravers in the industry. Front lock mechanism operates properly. Housed in a black leather plush case. CONDITION: Excellent. PROVENANCE: From the collection of Frank Brownell.
