In 1867, the government made a decision to convert Sharps percussion carbines and rifles for use with self contained cartridges. This is one of the approximately 31100 carbines that were converted, this example is the 3-groove in .50-70. These were widely used out west in the early Indian Wars. They are standard Civil War carbines in most respects that were converted, arsenal refinished, and issued. The Sharps barrel legend is partially visible. The original Lawrence rear sight is present. Right side of action has the Sharps legends. Top of barrel stamped "New Model 1863". The left side of the walnut stock has the inspector cartouche "EF" for Edward Flather, as well as the small DGC for David Clark ribbon on left side of stock. CONDITION: Very good. Case colors have darkened. Barrel shows flashes of protected blue but is basically a soft patina. The stock is solid with the usual small dings and impressions. The action works correctly. The bore is shiny. A true survivor of both the Civil War and the Indian Wars. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection.
