According to Flayderman's, a contract for 5000 carbines was executed on January 2nd, 1865, with the state of Kentucky to arm the home guard to protect Sherman's supply lines to Atlanta. 3000 featured 30" barrels and 2000 had 22" barrels. The left side of frame is stamped Kentucky. These were made by the Meriden Manufacturing Co in Connecticut. Apparently, they were delivered too late to be of service. Features a round barrel, single barrel band, post front sight, military style folding ladder rear sight, and walnut stock with steel carbine buttplate and swivel. Meriden legend is found on tang and left side of receiver. The barrel twists to allow loading. CONDITION: Good. Like almost every known used example, the stock is cracked on left side almost to butt plate. Metal is smooth homogenous patina and all legends are crisp. Bore is strong and bright with some abrasion. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection.
