The frame dates to 1898 but the barrel address and model stamps are later, indicating the barrel was replaced but there is no PW or oval P. The tang has the earliest first type legend with patent date. This carbine has the rifle style stock and buttplate which fits correctly, proud to metal, which this cataloger believes to be correct, especially since there is no saddle ring. This gun also has the rare close set double triggers. All other features are standard for a carbine to include the long forearm, full magazine, post front sight, and folding ladder rear sight. Barrel legends on both sides close to breech. CONDITION: Very good. There is no apparent finish remaining as the gun is now just a faded grey patina with evidence of some cleaning. Stock has scattered abrasions. Forearm has a stress crack on left side. Bore is well defined but frosted. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection.
