A Civil War M1850 Foot Officer's Sword by Christopher Roby. The sword features double etched blade that is decorated with patriotic and foliate motifs for about half its length. The sword is maker marked using acid etching on the obverse ricasso and reads "C. Roby & co. / W. Chelmsford / Mass.". Blade exhibits areas of pitting throughout its length. Hilt is as typically encountered on M1850 swords with open scrollwork on the guard, laurel engraved pommel, and tiered cap. Grip is of wood and grooved to accommodate twisted brass wire over the shagreen wrap. Guard with pleasing patina and portions of wrap are missing on grip. Complete with leather scabbard that is missing the drag. Upper mount is loose and marked "C. ROBY & CO / W. CHELMSFORD, MASS". Mounts exhibit a light patina with blemishes. Scabbard body exhibits several bends and surface cracking. CONDITION: Fair. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection.
