In 1867, the government placed an order with the Sharps Rifle company to convert existing percussion carbines to be capable of firing a self contained cartridge. Sharps converted a bit over 30,000 such conversions. As was their practice, they would use parts from different guns and models. This 1859 has a later style stock that does not have the patch box. These guns were inspected by David Clark and his DFC initials in a ribbon were stamped on the left side of the stock. This carbine features the round barrel, replaced blade in original base front sight, Lawrence stamped folding ladder rear sight, lined three groove barrel, single barrel band, metal butt plate, saddle ring and bar with walnut stocks. Right side of receiver has the Sharps and Lawrence patent legends. The DFC ribbon is visible on stock. There are no visible legends on barrel. These guns were arsenal refinished after conversion. Finish was blue with case color. CONDITION: Very good. All case colors have turned dark and there is scattered pitting. The barrel retains a blue patina mix with scattered age freckling. The stock is solid but does have numerous dings and abrasions with some chipping at butt plate. The bore is strong but dulling. Action works properly. An honest well used probable Indian Wars gun.
