This is a period gunsmith conversion that took advantage of a readily available western frontier firearm and made it sporting friendly. The original rifle was built in Dec-Jan 1886-87. The custom workmanship is superb and appears of the period. The rifle is now a full length stocked in carbine length with a 20 - 1/2" barrel. It features two barrel bands, a custom built front sight, a flat top sporting rear sight with a checkered walnut base. The left side of forearm is checkered while the right wrist is checkered but neither have checkering on both sides. The wrist sports the checkered metal attachment. The right side of stock has a leather 3-round cartridge holder. The hammer has an braised checkered brass spur. The barrel is blue with case color breech. Lock with an early "US SPRINGFIELD 1873" with eagle. Left barrel breech has eagle head VP proof. Script P at base of wrist. CONDITION: Fine. There are period repaired cracks on both sides of wrist but solid. Right side of stock has the carved Texas Star. Block retains some strong colors. Barrel retains 90% rich blue with some patina bleeding through. Bore is sharp. This little custom western carbine has the look.
