This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/11/2024
Manufactured in Baltimore by H. Merrill. This popular Civil War carbine model was issued to at least twelve Union cavalry units. It is a highly finished firearm that features a round barrel, integral front sight, two leaf folding rear sight, saddle ring and bar, brass trigger guard, butt plate, barrel band, and patch box. Stock is dark American walnut. Left side has a cartouche "RP" which is listed as Richard Paine but this cataloguer cannot find him listed as inspecting Merrill carbines. The top release lever has the Merrill patent legend as does the lock plate. The barrel is finished in a very thin bright blue. The top lever and receiver are a peacock nitre blue. The hammer, lock, and breech plug are all finished in a bright peacock case color finish with a rainbow hue. All matching numbers. CONDITION: Excellent. The stock still retains the raised grain but does have a few dings. Someone carved the initials BAC on the left side. The cartouche is sharp. The lever and receiver retain nearly all the peacock blue as does the lock and hammer. The screws on patch box still retain nearly all their high polish blue. The barrel retains 95% of its high polish blue with scattered light scratches and some muzzle wear. The bore is strong and bright with some light residue. Action is tight as new. This high condition carbine is finished like an expensive sporting rifle.
