This carbine was manufactured by the American Machine Works in Springfield, Massachussets, from 1861-1865. It was a very popular carbine with the troops and was issued to at least nine cavalry units. It is noted that the government purchased nearly the entire production run of over 30,000 units. The design was patented by Gilbert Smith of New York with agents Thomas Poultney and D.B. Smith of Baltimore. It is a single shot, top break that features a blued octagon to round barrel, dovetailed German silver front sight, a leaf folding ladder rear sight, one barrel band, American walnut stock, sling bar and ring, case color receiver and hammer and an iron butt plate. Left side of stock has a visible but illegible cartouche stamp. Left side of receiver shows the Poultney & Smith legend along with the American Machine Works legend. Matching serial numbers. CONDITION: Fine. There are flashes of receiver colors but has basically dulled to soft grey. The top barrel release catch retains the majority of the peacock fire blue finish. Barrel retains about 95% rust blue with overall light age freckling. The lower tang is missing its rear screw. Stock is very good, scattered dings / impressions but has a tight repaired hairline on left side with exposed epoxy (could easily be blended for better appearance). Bore is sharp and bright with light residue.
