In 1867, the government placed an order with the Sharps Rifle company to convert existing percussion carbines into rifles capable of firing a self contained cartridge. Sharps completed a bit over 30,000 such conversions. As was their practice, they would use parts from different guns and models. These guns were inspected by David Clark and his DFC initials in a ribbon are stamped on the left side of the stock. This carbine features a round barrel, German silver blade front sight in original base, Lawrence stamped folding ladder rear sight, original 6-groove barrel, single barrel band, metal butt plate, saddle ring and bar, and walnut stocks. Right and left sides of receiver have the Sharps patent legends. The DFC ribbon is visible on stock. New Model 1863 legend on barrel. These guns were arsenal refinished after conversion. Finish was blue with case color. CONDITION: Fine. All case colors have turned a soft even patina The barrel retains a smooth blue patina mix. The stock is solid but does have numerous dings. The bore is strong with light abrasions. Action works properly. Fine example of an Indian Wars gun.
