Between 1867-1874, the Springfield Armory altered and refinished approximately 11,000 carbines, many of which were reissued to cavalry troops on the western frontier. This alteration has the Stabler cut off and lined three groove rifled barrel. Standard features include an American walnut stock, buttplate with tube, saddle bar and ring, single barrel band, round blued barrel, post front sight, 700-yard folding ladder rear sight, and case color receiver. The receiver bridge has the Spencer 1860 patent legend. CONDITION: Very good. The case colors have all darkened to mottled grey. The barrel is also a dull grey with scattered freckling. The bridge legend is partially obscured. The stock is solid but has numerous impressions, some dings, and a 5" scratch on left side. Action is fine. Rifling is well defined but does have residue and abrasions. This is a historic gun that probably saw use during the entirety of the Civil War and then at points west of the Mississippi.
