Essentially a second generation Grandpa, the so-called Papa Nambus were the result of a revision in 1904 by Kijiro Nambu. This example is one of the more interesting privately produced examples by Tokyo Gas Electric company, who appear to have taken the reins from Tokyo Artillery Arsenal on production of the Papa, as Naval adoption of the Papa meant that Tokyo arsenal no longer had the production capacity to keep up. After World War I, the Papa Nambu (and the Baby) was shelved in favor of the Type 14, and the parts left over from Tokyo Arsenal were provided to Tokyo Gas Electric, who fulfilled the final contracts and finally ceased private production in 1928. Matching serial numbers observed on recoil spring guide rod, locking block, firing pin carrier, cocking knob, frame, barrel assembly, and both grip scales. Interestingly, the numbers are all overstamped over the same number (6882) instead of matching various numbers to 6710. Typical markings throughout with some smaller proofs that might be inspector marks? Magazine mismatched, 5552. Housed in the rubberized canvas holster with sling inside and japanned buckles. CONDITION: Metal retains the majority of the original blue finish with freckling throughout. Straps essentially patina with corrosion of lanyard loop and grip safety. Mechanically fine, bore very good with some softness to rifling. Holster very good, with scattered handling mark and some looseness to stitching; tongue of pouch is peeling and frozen, exercise caution to avoid damage.
