Made for Pettengill by Rogers, Spencer & Co. in Willow Dale, New York, in the early 1860s. The U.S. Ordnance Department ordered 5000 of these guns in December of 1861 but the order was changed to 2000 guns in June of 1862. They were delivered and accepted between October 1862 through January of 1863. The 3rd Michigan cavalry were issued 500 guns, and the 3rd and 5th Missouri, the 1st Arkansas, the 3rd Illinois, and 3rd Kentucky also received a number of guns. Octagonal barrel. The two piece walnut grips have no visible inspector cartouche. The manufacture legend on frame is very legible. There are WW inspection stamps on frame, barrel and cylinder but, cannot find a serial number. Two screws have been replaced: loading lever and grip. CONDITION: Very good. There are flashes of original blue finish but is essentially a smooth homogenous grey. Grips are excellent. Cylinder does not index as the tip of the flat advance spring is broken. Bore is well defined. A very hard to find Civil War martial handgun and almost all of the troops issued these guns saw extensive battle service.
