This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/12/2024
These were made by S. North in Middletown, Connecticut, circa 1844-53 with 21" round barrel, two bands, button head ramrod with sling swivel on lower tang. The walnut stock has a cartouche in oval on left side that is visible but not legible. During the American Civil War, J. P. Morgan financed the purchase of 5,000 surplus rifles at $3.50 each, which were then sold back to the government for $22 each. All of the factory legends on receiver are no longer legible and were purposely removed. These carbines were rebored to a rifled .58 caliber and sold for about seven times the purchase price in a scheme that was referred to as the Hall Carbine Affair. CONDITION: Good. Metal is a grey brown patina. Wood is dark, has a repair at top of wrist and some chipping at tang of butt plate. Bore is well defined but does have abrasions.
