Beginning in 1867, the U.S. government requested that the Sharps Rifle Co. convert many of the old percussion guns to accept self contained cartridges. Sharps converted over 30,000 Civil War carbines of all types. This is a New Model 1863 that was converted but still sports the original six groove rifling. Guns were converted and refinished and bear the so called DFC inspection ribbon cartouche on left side of stock. Standard features include an American walnut stock with matching forearm, round barrel, integral front sight base with German silver blade, Lawrence marked ladder rear sight, saddle bar and large ring, and case color receiver. The right side of lock has the Lawrence and Sharp patent legends. Left side has Sharps legend partially polished off along with a "C" stamp for condemned. Left side of barrel has the E.A.W. inspector stamp for Elisha Wheeler. Top of barrel has the Sharps Hartford legend along with New Model 1863 at breech. The left side of stock at wrist has a three script letter cartouche stamp that is visible but illegible. CONDITION: Very good. The barrel is now a smooth grey patina mix with overall freckling. The case colors are dulled out to grey. All legends are sharp. The hammer retains most of the dull reapplied blue. Stocks are solid with scattered dings and impressions with some added finish. Bore is bright. There is, what appears to be, a factory metal slot repair on receiver bridge. There are also about a dozen kill notches on base of forearm.
