Only about 1000 made from 1847-48 by Remington in Herkimer NY. Referred to as the mule ear carbine. The top lever opens for loading. The percussion hammer is found on the right side of receiver along with the Maynard tape primer. The trigger guard, barrel bands and butt plate are brass. Lower tang has the large lanyard ring. The front brass sight is integral with front band. The round barrel is browned. The lock plate and breech lever were case color. Near full length walnut stock. The lock on right has the Remington's Herkimer NY legend. The left side of stock has an RP cartouche stamp for Richard Paine. Barrel breech is stamped W. Jenks, U.S.N., RP, P, 1847, CAST STEEL. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel retains majority of browned finish. Case colors no longer visible. Brass has toned. Stock has a repair at wrist. There are some indiscernible letters scratched into the right side and stock shows overall light dings and impressions. There is a crack on left side near barrel. Bore is dark with abrasion.
