Made for Pettengill by Rogers, Spencer & Co. in Willow Dale, NY in early 1860's. The U.S. Ordnance Department ordered 5000 of these guns in December of 1861 but was changed to 2000 guns in June of 1862. They were delivered and accepted between October 1862 through January of 1863. The 3rd Michigan cavalry were issued 500 guns as well as the 3rd and 5th Missouri, the 1st Arkansas, the 3rd Illinois and 3rd Kentucky. This is a six shot, hammerless, double action 44 with octagon barrel. The two piece walnut grips have an inspector cartouche on the left panel that is visible but not legible. The manufacture legend on frame is partially legible. Cylinder is number 2522 while frame is number 3522 (factory error). Has an old collection tag. Condition: Very good. There is no apparent original blue finish and all metal is now a smooth homogenous grey. Grips are excellent. Cylinder indexes and locks up correctly. Bore is well defined but there is abrasion. A very hard to find Civil War martial handgun.
