Designed for use on horseback, many saw Western issue with the 1st and 2nd Cavalries. Just 4,021 were manufactured from 1855 to 1857. This first year example is dated "1855" on lockplate and tang. Pistol features a rifled National Army Bright finished barrel marked at the breech with "V / P" and eagle head proofs. Blade front sight and 3-leaf rear graduated to 400 yards. Percussion lock with Maynard tape priming system. Walnut stock marked on the left flat with an illegible cartouche. Mounts include a captured ram rod, brass nose cap, brass barrel band, and brass pommel with lanyard loop. This example includes a nonmatching but correct walnut shoulder stock with brass mounts including "US" marked butt plate. Pommel is assembly numbered "07", the stock "12". Lot is also accompanied by a period leather sling. CONDITION: Very Fine. Steel components remain bright with legible markings. Brass exhibits a pleasant mellowing patina. Wood has been lightly cleaned and reoiled with some mild marks. Fine, bright bore with light scattered freckles showing little if any use. Crisp mechanics. Stock is difficult to remove as is fitted. A nice example of a scarce and desirable US martial arm.
