Developed prior to the outbreak of World War II, the short rail sniper reached its most refined and durable form in 1943. Although the majority of these rifles were built by J.P. Sauer and Mauser, many were assembled from other makes. This example was manufactured by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in 1943 with "BNZ / 43" receiver code. Standard military sights. Eagle over "H" Heer acceptance marked red glue laminate stock with cupped butt plate and stamped bottom metal. Rifle features a late style short rail scope mount with extra reinforcement pins which was implemented in 1943. Rail is numbered on the rear "51", the full "67551" stamped on the scope base. Scope is a period K. Kahles Hellavier with duplex crosshair reticle numbered "22580". As is usually encountered, scope and mount serial numbers do not match that of the rifle. Externally visible serial numbers on rifle are matching. Bayonet lug and sight hood appear to be replacements. Complete with a cross hatch pattern "L & F" marked sling. CONDITION: Good. Rifle shows a consistent, honest gray patina with areas of toning. Some added finish present on the nose cap, now toned to patina. Stock is cleaned with mild handling marks. Stampings are faint. Dark, oxidized bore with visible rifling. Fine mechanics. Optic would benefit from a professional cleaning.
