Prior to the 1935 adoption of the now iconic K98 Mauser, trials began in 1933 and an updated Standard-Modell rifle dubbed the Gewehr fuer Deutsche Reichspost (rifle for the German postal service) began production. In addition to arming the Reichspost, many of these rifles, including this example were procured to arm the paramilitary SA. Left of the stock features a roundel marked in the center "Ch.d.A / 65" which is believed to denote the Chef des Ausbildungswesens der obersten S.A., the procurement agency for the SA. Carbine is finished in lustrous commercial blue with commercial proofs. Receiver ring marked with the "MAUSER" banner and "1933" production date. Blade front sight and tangent rear. Walnut finger groove stock and handguard with flat steel butt plate. Externally visible numbers matching. Includes period leather sling and muzzle cover. CONDITION: Very Good. Rifle retains approximately 90% blue with some fading and mild wear. Stocks have been lightly sanded and reoiled, the "Ch.d.A" still legible. Very good, strong bore. Fine mechanics. A nice representation of a very important step in the development of the K98 with highly desirable SA attribution.
