This is an exceptionally attractive Spanish mountain howitzer marked “Y R” below Spanish crown on top of breech with, “F DE S 1862” above serial number 9232. Some of these Mountain Howitzers were supplied to the Confederacy and one specimen like this one is on display at Camp Douglas, Utah There is also the possibility this piece was captured during the Spanish-American War. Left trunnion, “BRONCES REFUND DOS” and right trunnion “P o 98”. Tube measures just over 38” long muzzle to casabel. Muzzle to end of trail is 70”. Wood spoke wheels with brass hubs and steel tires are 37” high. Width hub to hub 43”. Consignor states he had the carriage rebuilt by Charlie Steen, and that he added the plungers as reproductions from Trail Rock Ordnance. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is near excellent original finish with a please dark patina on the bronze tube with near excellent paint coverage on wood and metal furnishings of the carriage. Bore rifling is extremely fine to near excellent. This cataloger was able to move this cannon around with ease. An extremely attractive and very portable 19th-century cannon. A fine collectible specimen which makes for an excellent and attractive display piece, which could also be taken to the range where it would be sure to attract attention. JWK 2024-12-88.
