The 59th British Regiment of Foot were in stationed in Boston when the Revolutionary War broke out and they suffered severe casualties. They were at Lexington and Concord as well at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The remnants of the regiment returned to England in 1776 to reform and re-recruit because their losses were so heavy that it devastated the regiment. The barrel is engraved "59TH REGT" and has the Tower view and proof marks in the center on top near the breech and "MB" on left side of breech. The Pattern 1769 lock is marked "TOWER" at the tail and is engraved with a large crown over "GR" in the center. Stamped crown over broad arrow beneath pan. Standard brass Short Land Pattern furniture, wrist escutcheon marked "68 / G". Walnut stock with crown over "1786" storekeeper's stamp on right side of buttstock and carved "I.T." Iron sling swivels and ramrods are original to musket. CONDITION: Barrel retains a dark heavy patina. Lock has a replaced frizzen, frizzen spring and cock. Lockplate is period but a replacement to this musket. Sideplate and second ramrod ferrule back from muzzle are modern replacements. Top jaw and top jaw screw are missing and lock needs mainspring. Stock shows scattered marks from use.
