It is believed that this short rifle is in its original configuration and has not been shortened. The relief carved moldings along the ramrod terminal end properly and have not been altered. The foremost barrel key is in the proper location and no barrel lugs have been moved. The nosecap is also properly applied. These features suggest that this rifle may have been a special order, perhaps for horseback use. The heavy two stage buck-and-ball barrel is unsigned and has a brass front blade sight and a notched iron rear sight. The converted lockplate is hand engraved. The brass furniture includes a pierced and engraved four piece patchbox of typical Frederick Sell design. The sideplate is also engraved. The partially figured tiger maple stock is carved with extensive relief c-scrolls on the left side of the buttstock, around the barrel tang and on the right side of the wrist. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina, percussion corrosion at breech. Lock retains a matching patina and functions well, hammer screw is a modern replacement. Brass retains a pleasing mustard patina, Stock shows some losses along right side of forend and a small piece in front of lockplate. A very interesting rifle.
