This fine rifle features a full octagon barrel with deep rifling, a notched iron rear sight and a brass front sight with silver blade. The Germanic lock is later but well aged. The notable brass furniture includes a classic four piece Berks County patchbox, toeplate with finial matching that of the patchbox and a Berks sideplate with beveled edges. There is a finely engraved silver eight point star above the cheekpiece and a silver oval inlay in front of the toeplate as well as on the wrist. The highly figured tiger maple stock is of classic Berks County form and has relief foliate designs carved on the left side of the buttstock. There are also relief scrolls carved around the barrel tang, ramrod entry ferrule and in front of the cheekpiece. There are large shaped relief panels around the lock and sideplate cavities with the backs terminating in teardrops. Period wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a dark patina. Well-aged later lock. Sideplate missing a small piece in front of foremost lock bolt. Brass retains a pleasing patina. There are small old nails to the left of the barrel tang to secure an old crack. Carving shows some wear and stock has some scattered marks from use and retains much of its original finish in protected areas. A very nice early Berks County rifle.
