Jacob Stoudenour (1795-1863) was an important rifle maker and gunsmith in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Deeply rifled octagon barrel with swamped muzzle, inscribed "J* Stoudenour" on top flat and stamped with "IS" makers cartouche in sunken square on top, near breech. Classic Bedford lock converted to percussion and inscribed "JS" in center. Double set triggers. There are a total of 21 engraved silver inlays. The brass patchbox has five piercings and a silver inlay within the classic Bedford "Q" finial. There is a shaped and engraved brass warplane extending from the trigger guard tang to the ramrod entry ferrule. Pierced and engraved sideplate. Above cheekpiece are two crossed silver-inlaid flags with a heart between them. Highly figured tiger maple stock of classic Bedford County form featuring a sleeved wrist and high relief scrolls on left side of buttstock with a checkered silver inlay incorporated in the largest scroll. There are three relief carved and checkered panels on each side of the forend and shaped relief panels of gadrooning just in front of the lock and sideplate. Silver inlaid scrolls surround the barrel tang. Complete with its original ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a dark brown patina with very good legible signature and some corrosion at breech. Lock retains a grey patina and functions properly, some light pitting. Brass retains a mustard patina, silver inlays retain a pewter patina. The inlay on each side closest to muzzle are both replaced. Stock shows some age cracks, wear, marks from use and minor woodwork on left side of muzzle. A very attractive double signed Bedford rifle.
