Approximately 700 of this variation were assembled from Civil War Sharps carbine receivers with new made parts around 1870. These rifles were issued in 1871 and 1872 for Army field trials against the trapdoor and rolling block rifles, many seeing use on the frontier. Rifle features a matching 3-groove rifled barrel chambered for the standard .50-70 cartridge. Bayonet lug front sight and folding 900 yard graduated rear sight. Full length walnut forend retained by a pair of barrel bands. Plain walnut stock with an oval "ESA" Erskine Allin inspector cartouche and "US" marked butt plate. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel and bands display a silvery patina with some older oxidation spotting. Receiver has also largely faded to gray with some case color patterning, as well as a few flashes of color in protected areas. Stocks appear lightly cleaned and reoiled with some expected impressions throughout. Strong and bright bore with a few black powder abrasion spots. Fine mechanics.
